Chapter 1—Strange and Unusual
In a
galaxy not far from our own exists and earth where anthropomorphic creatures.,
hybrids and all manner of unusual bipeds exist. For the most part, their intermingling is harmonious
and Raypeople are plentiful. Raymona
is one of those odd hybrids. She works
as a DJ at the local Smoke and Mirrors dance club where she moonlights
as a magician on Fridays, dazzling the crowd with her sleight of hand. It’s easier limbless since her floating
hands and feet make the illusions even more spectacular than a typical magician’s
would.
It was
a typical Friday. Raymona wore her best
strapless royal purple dress and rave boots.
The boots glowed in the dark, just like her 1980’s era ‘shade glasses’. She puckered her lips to apply neon green luminescent
lipstick and quickly applied rapid dry neon green glow in the dark nail polish,
spun around like a dervish to dry them, took a quick glance in the mirror, and
tied up her golden hair in a bow before departing for the nightly grind.
Work
was more of a playground for Raymona.
Everyone she met genuinely adored her and she had few enemies. There were the typical party poopers that
had to be asked to leave kindly, or else the bouncer would eject them for being
disorderly or untoward when it came to Raymona. She didn’t mind the occasional flirting,
but some guests would take it too far and get a little handsy. She wasn’t afraid to fight back if she had
to, but it was rare.
After a
fulfilling, satisfying night, Raymona traveled the dimly lit, dingy alleyway
that led to her car. Out of nowhere, a
tempestuous vortex popped overhead and drew her into it. Raymona tried everything to avoid being sucked
into the portal, but nothing worked. Her rave boot was the first thing that was yanked
from her foot, and eventually she lost her grip. Unfortunately, she hit a flagpole flying
into the portal and was knocked out cold for the duration of the weird journey,
wherever she was going.
Chapter 2—Are you an Angel ?
Meanwhile
in Rayman’s universe, he was taking a much-needed respite from being a genuine
hero and savoring a splendid meal with his best friend and sidekick,
Globox. Globox heard something unusual,
akin to a storm, in the sky. Rayman had
his eyes closed, lost in the ecstasy of his meal. Arrant butterflies flitted about, one
landing on his nose before it flitted away.
Globox sensed something sinister and called for Rayman to take cover
before he was smacked in the mouth by a rave boot.
‘Who on
earth uses a rave boot as a weapon ?
Alright, whoever just chucked that at me, be prepared. I won’t go easy on you.’, he warned,
preparing to wind up his fist for an attack.
The verbal alarm wasn’t enough though, because before he knew it, he was
knocked out cold by something or someone, and slowly, deliberately, began to
regain his vision.
‘Uggghhh…’,
both Raypeople groaned as they awoke.
When they saw each other for the first time, it was almost like time had
no hold on either of them. Everything
moved at a steady, legato pace.
‘Are
you an angel ?’, the two asked each other.
Rayman laughed.
‘You
first ! Are you hurt ?’, Rayman asked,
clearly head over heels for the rayperson who literally just fell from the sky
moments earlier. Rayman was used to
seeing other raypeople, but one that looked exactly like him was definitely a
rarity, and she was a vision to behold.
‘I’m fine. I’m Raymona.
What is this place ?’, Raymona asked.
‘I’m
Rayman, Mona. I hope it’s ok to call
you Mona.’, Rayman began. He explained
that this place was the Glade of Dreams, and nothing was as it appeared. It was like Chuck Jones collaborated with
Salvador Dali, with hints of fairy tale trickery, mystery, and magic. This world was nothing like Earth back
home. With no way of returning home,
Mona began to lament. Rayman, being the
gentle hybrid he was, comforted her and taught her everything he knew. Besides, he enjoyed her company and liked
being near her. In fact, he was certain
that both of them were steadily falling in love with each other, which he had
never experienced before. It was all so
new and fresh to them both, but they would surmount any and all obstacles
better as a team, especially since Globox was behind them.
Chapter 3—Getting Used to the Glade
Mona
quickly learned that she had incredible abilities and helping the helpless felt
extraordinary. Rayman asked about
what Raymona had done before landing in the Glade. Raymona’s lovely blue eyes danced as she
told him, and she said,
‘I can
teach you how to dance, too. That is, if
you’d like.’,
‘I do a
bit of singing and dancing myself. But I’d
love to see your moves !’, Rayman said.
There weren’t any indigent to feed, house or teach self-sufficiency,
there were no Teensies to rescue, so it was just her and Rayman, dancing until
the sun went down.
‘You’re
incredibly talented. It’s a pity you
can’t go back, though. I’m sure they
miss you there.’, Rayman said. Globox
glowered at his friend. His heart had
been in the right place, but what he had said was a smidge insensitive. Fortunately, Mona didn’t interpret it that
way.
‘Of
course, but had that freak portal never occurred, I wouldn’t have met you. You’re the best thing to ever happen to me.’,
Mona said. Raymona looked into Rayman’s
deep, chocolate eyes and giggled softly.
She leaned forward, caressing his beautiful platinum hair and dipped him
into a passionate kiss. Rayman
staggered upward, looking drunk. They
were about to make out until they heard a distress call from Barbara.
‘Again,
with kidnapping ! How can Barbara not keep
herself from getting into trouble, I will never know !’, Rayman kvetched. It was all in jest, however, because
Barbara was one of his best friends, so, being the altruist, he was and having
the assistance of Raymona and Globox, the two set out on a quest to free their
friend from the clutches of whatever villain had entrapped her.
Chapter 4—Two Peas in a Pod
Globox
knew true love when he had seen it. He
was, after all, a family man with more kids than one could shake a stick
at. It didn’t surprise him much when
Rayman took Raymona to a glade, overflowing with rivers, rills and streams and
proposed to her there. There was a vine
swing that he pushed her on and another beside it. The two would swing for moments on end until
jumping off and sticking their landings.
Inevitably, the two would find each other lost in each other’s eyes and
smooching until the sun set.
When
the wedding was held, although it was intimate, it seemed that everyone and
their brother knew about it. It had
been whispered about and so many had been wondering when Rayman would ever meet
his soulmate. She came from halfway
across the galaxy from a whole other universe, but it really did cement home
the fact that love does move in mysterious ways and in fact, there are people
whose red thread exists simply because they do. That’s just another enigmatic truth of how
love functions and how it is the strongest element around.
Epilogue
True as
it is that Rayman and Mona continue their selfless journey to help whomever
they can and leap into action whenever they see an injustice committed, the two
find themselves facing the gamut of parenthood together. Raypeople have quite large families, but as
a team, there is nothing that Rayman and Mona cannot do. There is still a fervor, an ardor between
the lovers that grows hotter all the while.
This love appreciates with time and only grows sweeter as the two
parents, lovers and friends grow older.
Although the earth that Raymona departed from remembers her fondly, they
sense her presence light years away, grinning from the Glade, hand in hand with
her soulmate.
