Mobius Welcomes the Kratt Brothers
Synopsis: A Sonic Underground AU crossover with the PBS
children's educational series Zoboomafoo. The Kratt Brothers and
their friend, the leaping lemur Zoboo, experience interdimensional travel and
visit Mobius for the first time, after encountering a young Mobian who got
separated from her family.
Chapter 1—Going on a Cool Adventure
Chris
and Martin were about to start their latest episode as a ‘fan mail Friday’. The duo hadn’t looked at their masses of
letters and emails from all over the world and were more than pleased to field
those questions today. The episode
concerned insects, especially ones that lived in tropical climates and stranger
ones that thrived in Australia. The two
of them didn’t bother with such possible nasty bugs as the bullet ant. That was more Coyote Peterson’s forte than
theirs. By the end of the take, the
duet was led by Zoboo outside of Creature Junction.
‘What’s
gotten into you, Zoboo ?’, Chris asked, thinking that it was time for their
furry friend to be napping rather than all riled up and taking them far from
familiar territory.
‘We
shouldn’t stray too far from the Junction.
The keepers are going to get upset if we let you romp free for too
long.’, Martin added.
‘You
two worry way too much, you know that ?
Stop acting like dads for a moment and learn to live a little !’, Zoboo said,
in a lackadaisical tone as he continued leaping about. It wasn’t long before Zoboo hurtled
himself through a tear in space time unknowingly that the duet followed
suit.
All
three of them were hurtling through scenes that seemed to look vaguely familiar. There was a sense of anemoia as they were
descending or in this case, ascending through the wormhole. It was difficult to determine direction in
something fluid that had the texture of fine-grained sand and silk, but as they
were floating (or was it falling ?) through this tesseract, they emerged on the
other side and found a little lost Thylacine-Hyena hybrid that went by the name
of Sephora.
Chapter 2—Finding Sephora’s Parents
‘Where
are your parents ?’, Chris asked, gently as he met the adorable hybrid’s eyes
and placed his hands upon her shoulders.
Sephora almost trusted the two instantaneously since her discernment
clued her in the duet meant no harm and only wanted to help her. Zoboo was able to comfort the little child
and keep her laughing although he was sure that this moment was terrifying for
her.
Sephora
explained that she had gotten separated from her parents on a scavenger hunt
with her brother Russel and not only had she lost track of time, but her
direction left a lot to be desired.
She was still young, so figuring her left from her right was still
confusing, but she knew she’d understand in time.
Along
the way, Sephora recalled the Pascha Fest that had been held at the Crystal
Castle not far from where she had wandered off. It was still a bit of a trek, but
fortunately, she was wearing her hiking boots and the brothers had come
prepared with snacks if they worked up an appetite on the trail.
'You're gonna love the Crystal
Castle !', Sephora said. 'It's one of the many palaces and
castles that King Sonic and Queen Amy own !'
'King Sonic ?', asked Chris.
'Queen Amy ?', added Martin.
'Wow, milay !', added Zoboo.
The
Kratts wondered if the King and Queen that Sephora had mentioned were from the
video games they had played when they were kids.
‘Nah,
that’s just some kind of coincidence.’, Martin laughed to himself, although no
one heard his musing. They continued
tromping along until they reached the towering double door. Unafraid, Sephora rang the doorbell and the
four waited.
‘Give
me a second…’, came a pleasant but nasal voice as a hologram peered from the
viewpoint of the surveillance camera.
‘Is
that…?’, Chris queried aloud.
‘Yep,
that’s the hedgehog of the hour ! He
only looks imposing.’, Sephora reassured them.
‘I can’t
believe my mind !’, Zoboo exclaimed, in childlike wonder.
Chapter 3—King and Queen of Hospitality
When
Amy opened the massive oaken doors, the Kratts were taken aback by how vast the
Castle was. Everything was huge. Zoboo was taken in by everything he
saw, but he was cautioned by his friends to be careful around anything that
looked expensive and fragile.
‘I know
when to be careful !’, Zoboo stated defiantly.
It was then that he accidentally backed into a Greek column, sending a
vase colliding down onto the marble floor, but just before it could shatter
into a thousand pieces. Suddenly,
there was a robotic arm and a mellifluous voice that followed.
‘Sugar,
be a bit more careful there.’, the flaxen colored rabbit said. She was trailed by Antoine, her husband, friend,
and father to their warren, who were awakened by the noise.
‘What’s
going on, pere ?’, Gerard, the eldest asked.
His sister, drawn in by Zoboo, was fascinated seeing a lemur up close
and in the flesh.
‘Who
are these people ? Oh, hi, Sephora
! Fancy seeing you again !’, Diana
added, chuckling. Sephora and Diana were
close friends and often played together, even if there wasn’t a community
function that the DeCoolettes were attending along with the Crystal Court.
‘We’re
obviously not in Animal Junction anymore.’, Chris declared, his wonderment
evident.
‘No,
we’re from Earth, and this little girl here is looking for her parents. She said that King Sonic and Queen Amy could
assist…’, Martin added.
‘Say no
more. We’ll go fetch him.’, Gerard
answered, his glittering smile putting them all at ease. Everyone in the Castle was extremely
hospitable, kind, generous, warm, and welcoming. Zoboo felt completely comfortable and at
home, but he had never seen living accommodations so luxurious as this. He imagined this was how ancient
Mesopotamians and other incredible civilizations lived.
Fairly
soon, Amy and Sonic greeted the four of them and recognized their young friend.
‘Did
you get lost again ?’, Amy said, tousling the hybrid’s hair tenderly. Sephora nodded but wasn’t embarrassed by her
shortcomings.
‘Not
only that, but we have to return home.
You see, Zoboo, our furry friend, hopped through a slit in space and
time…’, Chris began.
‘Why do
all troubles begin with the phrase ‘slit in space time’ ?’, Rotor moaned. It wasn’t that the brilliant walrus minded
messing with quantum physics righting all wrongs, but these glitches in the
matrix were beginning to irk him slightly.
He and his human friend Cyril began to start deducing the exact location
of the Earth they belonged to. It would
take a few hours at most, but for the moment, Sonic and Amy decided to take the
Kratts on an adventure they would never forget.
Chapter 4—Safe in Wildvania
Amon
had been worried sick about his daughter, but when he and his wife were
reunited with her, they could breathe easy again. In order to prevent this from happening
again, he gifted her a GPS.
‘I
built this myself. Titus will never fail
you.’, he said.
‘Why
Titus ?’, Sephora asked, quizzically raising an eyebrow.
‘Titus
was someone you don’t know personally, darling. He was a mentor while I was still young in
the process of building our forest kingdom.
He was a Galapagos Tortoise and had lived hundreds of years. Sadly, he wasn’t immortal, and natural causes
caught up to him. I even made the GPS
to have some of his mannerisms. In a
way, he still watches over us, as is per his wishes.’, Amon said with a soft
grin.
‘Oooo
!’, Sephora exclaimed, pleased with the gift, though it was neither Christmas
nor her birthday. She could use it for
metal detecting later when the mood struck her, but since she wasn’t wandering
outside of Wildvania’s parameters, she shut Titus down and saved his
battery.
‘I take
it my friend has given you the grand tour ?’, Amon questioned. The Kratts nodded. All that they had seen of Mobius had been
breathtaking. The synergy of technology
and nature was inspirational. No one
was bound to technology, but it was used as a tool to assist with various
duties, chores, and errands that typical Mobians did on any given day. They were ecologically conscious, and the
air here was the cleanest and clearest they had ever inhaled. Wildvania was still developing, but it was
proving to be quite an exquisite place as well.
Chapter 5—A Farewell Dinner for the Kratts
Chris
and Matt almost didn’t want to leave the Crystal Castle. The hospitality here had been exquisite, and
the food had been scrumptious. Neither
one of them had ever heard of mork, let alone seen one in the wild, but
apparently, Mobian pigs did have wings and could fly.
‘Gives
a whole new meaning to flying pigs !
Milay !’, Zoboo chuckled as he saw a morklet flying around freely. Mork farmers were kindly folks, and they
raised their stock ethically. Most morks
were at liberty to do whatever they wished and roam freely throughout Mobius,
but at the Castle, it was the main meat of choice, especially when it came to
Mobian bacon and Mobian ham.
The brothers and their lemur were
feeling a bit stuffed although Zoboo only snacked on fruits and vegetables,
they felt a little tired. There was no
time to nap because Rotor informed them, he figured out where the tesseract was
and that it would close as soon as they leapt through it.
To be honest, Zoboo was the most reluctant to leave. Although he had only been there a day or two,
he had already formed some tight friendships he knew he would miss dearly.
‘Do I
really have to go back to Animal Junction ?
There are so many more animals here that actually understand me and some
of them even understand Madagascay.’, Zoboo said, with some sadness in his
tone.
‘People
will miss us if we’re not back on Earth.
We have so much to teach, and they’ll start to become concerned when
they don’t see you.’, Chris said, logically.
It gave the little lemur quite a bit to mull over in his mind. There were people, fans that actually counted
on Zoboo in every episode. Although
he was still young, Zoboo understood he had responsibilities and accountability. He could still maintain his inquisitive
nature, but he had to sacrifice other things for those back home that truly
mattered. Besides, without him, Matt
and Chris would be terribly lonely, and it wouldn’t be the same. So, with a determination exceeding his
years, Zoboo puffed out his chest proudly and grinned,
‘I
guess it’s time we say our farewells.’
Epilogue
In all honesty, Zoboo made a particularly important choice
to return with his best friends rather than staying in Mobius.
‘It’s
not like it’s farewell forever. We
might be called upon in the future somehow.
Though I haven’t really thought much about how that would play out.’, Matt
chortled.
‘It’s ok if we don’t go back. I know my proper place is here and educating
your human friends is what I’m meant to do.’, Zoboo said, maturely. Nighttime was falling soon, and the sun was
setting. It was time to bid adieu to another
day. Zooboo got tucked into his little
hammock where he pulled a blanket around him to keep him warm. Matt and Chris headed home and settled into
bed, their minds full of the treasures they had seen on Mobius and the adventures
they had led.
