Mauve the Cocktail Queen

Synopsis:  Inspired by the Simpsons episode ‘The Blue and the Grey’, we learn of a local patron at the bar who tips Moe frequently.  Eventually, he asks her out and the two fall in love.

Chapter 1—Wanting What She Could Never Have

Mauve Syzlack was becoming jaded as she grew older.   True, she was a hopeful romantic and had experienced love in many forms, but no one ever committed.   No one ever stayed, nobody rang back.   She could make meals that would make anyone drool and her mellifluous voice would make any man swoon.    However, most guys around these parts just saw her as a quick roll in the hay or a tizzy in the sack.

As usual, her typical patrons poured in, wanting signature drinks.   Mavue was saavy enough to have two businesses and yet have enough time for ballroom dance on the weekends, the occasional excursion over to the amusement park or a bit of rock climbing.   She was by no means an old fuddy duddy.   Someday, she planned on caravanning the US and getting herself out of Rocky Pointe, Maine.

When Melvin Simpson came in for his usual drink, Mauve’s knees went weak.   She had been dreaming of him and fawning all over him since she began her journey as a ‘bartender supreme’ and ‘queen of cocktails’.    She sighed, gave him his usual and then received a call from Melanie, Melvin’s brat daughter.   Of course, she had no idea she was being pranked.

‘Listen, you little twat.  If I ever find out who you are, I’m gonna gut you like a fish, crack you like a lobster and flay you.’, she seethed.    At least she was relegated to being MJ’s babysitter and it gave her a purpose, but she longed for her own family, even if it meant adoption.

Chapter 2—The Patron

Night after night, Gary Oldstein would tip Mauve more than the usual customer.

‘If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you’d be tryin’ to take me out on a date.’, Mauve laughed.   Gary had been doing this for at least a month and he cleared his throat.

‘Quite astute.  I didn’t know how you’d feel.   I took a more indirect approach, but now since the cat is out of the bag, what do you think ?’, Gary questioned.   Gary was the first decent man that Mauve had seen in a dog’s age and she felt ‘why the hell not’ ?

The evening was spent at her favorite place, the amusement park.   Most might not think of this as a romantic locale, but with the Ferris wheel and the tunnel of love, it was a popular place amongst the local romantics.    Mauve recited a poem she had been working on and Gary applauded.

‘My, you have a way with words.’, he commented, holding her hand in his.   He tenderly stroked her hand with his thumb and gazed into her eyes.

‘You are so beautiful.   Others don’t realize it, but I clearly see it.’, Gary said.   He moved in for a tender smooch from her, and all of a sudden the two were all over each other like eels in a cove.    Before they knew it, they had found themselves in bed.   Mauve hadn’t let anyone seen her in the nude in years and was a bit self-conscious of her body image.   Gary reassured her.

‘So you have love handles.  Who cares ?  I’m not built like Adonis.’, Gary laughed.  She curled up close to Gary, resting her head on his heart.    She had to find out more about him and see if they had anything other in common than explosive sex and fiery kisses.

Chapter 3—Want to Come Along ?

Gary had revealed to Mauve over time that he was from a port city close to Rocky Pointe, but he too, wanted to leave as soon as he had enough money to do so.   They would be heading more so into the countryside.   Houses weren’t cheap there, but the two of them figured they could do it together.   Their relationship was moving along quite quickly but they figured they could reach unobtainable heights better as a team than they would going about it solo.

In time, Mauve and Gary were happily married.   Despite Mauve’s age, she could still bear children.

‘Do you think that’s such a great idea, what with my temper ?’, Mauve questioned as they found themselves preparing for twins, the sex of which was unknown.

‘You’ve been so much better about that.  You’re less jaded, less sour, and your sweetness is overflowing.’, Gary stated, honestly.

‘Yuck, gag me.  I sound like I should come with a label for diabetics.’, Mauve laughed, looking down at her expanding belly.    Gary patted her stomach, feeling for the babies’ movement.

‘Despite your temper, you’re going to be amazing.   We made the move, but you never lost your accent !’, Gary teased as he tickled her mildly.   He adored making her laugh, and seeing her smile was the highlight of his day.   It was true that Mauve hadn’t lost her accent from the time she grew up in jolly old England.   That, in fact, had been the place where she had been born.   She moved to Maine when she was emancipated at 16, worked her way into her current abode, and eventually found herself slinging cocktails at her own bar.  If that wasn’t the truest form of ‘American dream success’, then nothing was.

Epilogue

Mauve even traveled the states to reunite with other Syzslacks.  The research didn’t take long, and she finally got a chance to meet Moe himself.   He was almost exactly like her and seeing himself reflected in Mauve made him brighten.

‘You’re making the family name proud.  I see you’re about ready to bring new Syzlack into the world, too.’, Moe said, a gentle smile upon his face.   It was rare for Moe to smile, but with cousins in the world, he felt he had more purpose.   The stay in Springfield was short since the Oldsteins had to return to the Maine countryside.   Mauve and Gary reside together there with their beautiful twin daughters, Ivy and Holly.    Sometimes, all it takes for happiness to be achieved a little nudge is all that’s needed.
